How to check it: open the folder you saved the file in, type cmd in the address bar, and run certutil -hashfile GuitarVee-0.1.0-alpha-b062.zip SHA256. The line it prints should match the value above, character for character — ignore any spaces it inserts. If it does not match, delete the file and download it again. The file is 3,645,915 bytes (about 3.4 MB).
Experimental, and not signed yet.
Two separate things, and both of them will be visible on your screen.
Windows will warn you the first time. This is expected.
This is an experimental test build. It has not been through a release cycle, it has not been signed with a code-signing certificate, and Windows has never seen it before. Two warnings follow from that.
“Windows protected your PC” A blue SmartScreen box appears when you run guitarvee.exe. Click More info, then Run anyway. “This file isn’t commonly downloaded” Your browser may flag the ZIP as uncommon or unsafe while it downloads. Choose Keep (in Edge or Chrome you may need the small menu next to the download, then Keep anyway). What that message actually means. Both warnings say the same thing in different words: we do not recognise this publisher. They are reputation checks, not virus findings. Windows shows them for any new program that has not yet been signed with a certificate and downloaded enough times to build a reputation. Nothing has been detected in the file — there is simply nothing known about it.
A signed build is coming. Code signing is on the list for the first non-alpha release. Once the build is signed and Windows has seen it a few times, both warnings stop appearing.
If a warning ever names a specific threat — stop. “Unknown publisher” and “not commonly downloaded” are the expected messages. If Windows Security, Defender, or your antivirus names an actual virus, trojan, or malware family, that is different: do not run the file. Delete it, and send a report with a screenshot of exactly what was named and where you downloaded from. Only ever download GuitarVee from this website.
Alpha means alpha.
It is playable end to end. It will also have rough edges, and being told about them is the entire point of putting it out.
Rough edges are expected
Layouts that do not quite fit, a control that does not do what its label promises, a screen that needs a nudge to redraw. If something looks wrong, please report it.
Things will change
Screens, shortcuts and wording can move between alpha builds. Release notes say what changed and what is known-broken, in plain language.
Your data may need re-importing
Saved songs, settings and progress live in AppData and normally survive an update — but during the alpha a storage format can change, and you may have to re-import a pack. Use Import / Export to keep a copy of anything you would hate to redo.
Please report what you hit
What you did, what you expected, what happened. That is the whole ask, and it is worth more than a star rating.
Unzip it. Double-click it. That is the install.
What you need
- Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit
- About 8 MB free once unzipped
- Headphones or speakers — several practice games listen and play back
- Optional: a guitar and an audio interface for the amp room and the ear games; a microphone works too
- Optional: a gamepad — the whole app is reachable from a controller
Good to know
- Nothing is installed. Delete the folder and GuitarVee is gone from the machine.
- Keep the files together. The app needs the bundle folder sitting next to guitarvee.exe.
- Your work is kept separately in AppData, so you can swap this folder for a newer build later.
- If Steam is running when you launch, GuitarVee appears in Steam and achievements pop there too. If it is not, everything still works.
- Download the ZIP using the button above. If the browser says the file is not commonly downloaded, choose Keep.
- Unzip the whole folder somewhere you can find it — the Desktop is fine. Keep the contents together; do not pull the EXE out on its own.
- Double-click guitarvee.exe.
- The first time, Windows will warn you. On the blue “Windows protected your PC” box: click More info, then Run anyway. Why this happens.
- Start anywhere. GuitarVee opens in Simple mode; the Simple | Full switch in the top bar (or F9) shows everything. Songs → pick one → Perform. Or Practice Games for random tabs and technique drills on the guitar, with quick theory rounds after them, or the Amp Sim — plug in, or press Test Riff if you have not.
- When something breaks, write it down — what you did, what you expected, what happened — and send it in.
Version-locking, on purpose.
Every release stays on this page. Nothing is taken down and nothing updates you off a build you like — so a class that started the term on one version can finish the term on it, and a lesson plan written against a screen still matches that screen.

NotesThe master volume in the top bar is now a speaker in the accent colour with its level printed inside it, so it is easy to find at a glance.

NotesKaraoke's chord boxes now follow the Fretboard Strings setting, so they read the same way round as the Scale Chart and the neck diagrams.

NotesThe top bar now has a Drum Loop and a Bass Loop, each with its own Play and settings, on one shared clock, and a Bass Loop started from the Progression Builder plays the chords on the page. The Builder lists the scales and modes to play over your progression. The Scale Chart can name every note in sharps or in flats, and a new Fretboard setting draws the low string on top. Perform and Karaoke time each lyric line in bars at the song's tempo, with a beat indicator to keep time, and a line without a chord shows the one still sounding.

NotesThe Pedal Platform's output section now carries 20 dB of headroom: a low E with the bass knob up, or a hard-driven pedal in front, no longer pushes it into break-up. Nothing else changed since b058.

NotesEvery amp cleans up at the bottom of its gain knob, and on nine of the thirteen amps the knob works again (since the 13 September build it only moved the level). Presets are grouped Clean, Overdriven, Rock and Heavy by how they measure, in the top bar and on the amp screen, and read preset-first; every amp has at least one clean preset, and presets that sounded alike were pulled apart. A new Pedal Platform amp - a clean, flat, high-headroom head - comes with fifteen pedal-driven rigs that set the amp and the pedalboard in one pick. Brit 800's first knob reads Gain. Five more tunings (B Standard, C Standard, C# Standard, Drop A, Drop C#) and custom tunings of your own on the Tuner page; a Frets picker on the Scale Chart draws 12 to 24 frets. On a controller, Left and Right jump between preset groups.

NotesThe same app as b056 on Windows; the READ ME FIRST file inside the download now lists Guitar Practice first in Practice Games, as the menu does. On the Steam Machine the guitar no longer clicks while you use the app. The buffer that carries the guitar from the audio interface into the amp used to cut a few milliseconds out of the signal whenever the machine was briefly busy - changing screens, turning a knob, starting the drums - and through a fuzz every cut was a click. It now keeps a small safety margin that sizes itself, takes out extra delay with a crossfade where the waveform lines up, repeats a single wave cycle instead of dropping out when the input runs late, and brings the guitar in at full resolution instead of 16-bit.

NotesPractice Games lead with the guitar in your hands: Guitar Practice comes first, with the Random Tab Generator and the Technique Exercises at the top, and the Theory Games follow. On the Steam Machine the amp plays smoothly again - the previous Steam build set the guitar input too tight and the sound glitched; the input is back to its automatic size, string to speaker through an audio interface is about 80 ms, and a steady tone runs a full minute without a dropout.

NotesThe amp reaches your speakers sooner. Nine of the twelve amp models now add about one millisecond of their own delay instead of 15 to 19 (measured on the Steam Machine), the amp starts faster on the Steam Machine, and the Steam Machine build's audio buffers were made smaller (its input side was set too tight and is fixed in b056). Tabs use the full width and wrap onto more lines instead of scrolling sideways - the Random Tab Generator, the technique exercises, the Tab Editor and the Progression Builder - and the Scale Chart's fretboard scales to the page. On the Steam Machine, sound now runs at 48 kHz end to end. Gated Fuzz is the new name of the choked fuzz pedal.

NotesDrums and bass are one band now: a Drums / Drums + Bass choice and one Play button in the top bar, and every drum and bass loop in the app plays the same sequence at one tempo - start your chords in the Progression Builder while the header groove runs and they come in on the next bar with one bass line following them; Stop anywhere stops it all. The Progression Builder loops until Stop and takes edits without stopping. Practice Games are split into Theory Games and Guitar Practice; the Random Tab Generator repeats with a countdown before each repeat and a wider tab; technique exercises have a key choice.

NotesA master volume in the top bar for everything GuitarVee plays, in Simple and Full; drums and bass no longer stop a second after they start; the CLIP light now says whether it is your input or the amp that is clipping; the high-gain amp models no longer run louder than intended; switching amps and pedals is smoother; the output picker says when the chosen output is not actually playing.

NotesThe amp screen reworked around the amp: model, faceplate, cab / speaker / mic first, then a signal path with FRONT and LOOP lanes, input device, channel and output pickers, a delay readout and effect settings; the Bass page and the header Drums + Bass quick start; Simple mode as the starting interface; foldable home panels; chords outside the key on the Progression Builder, Bass page and Scale Chart with proper flat-key spelling; songs that set the header tuning and capo; a Track level for backing tracks; an Amp voicing switch (Current / Previous) in Settings.
